My Moment on the Million Second Quiz

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Fun things happened this week. A couple of days ago, a fan on the MOMocrats Facebook page sent us this screenshot, from the app associated with that Million Second Quiz game show that NBC is promoting:

NBC's Million Second Quiz

As someone who enjoys playing trivia games, this just tickles me to no end. I also play with this app because the questions are so easy I had no trouble qualifying to be a contestant on the show. But if I had gotten this one, I probably would have failed to answer in the allotted five seconds, because I would have been so flabbergasted by it. Frankly, I’m surprised the person who sent this to me had the time to take the screenshot!

I’m hoping it’s a good omen. A couple of weeks ago, I applied for a job that seemed absolutely perfect for me. Last night, I received word that I did not get the job. It truly was the nicest rejection letter I had ever received. It was a long shot and I knew it, but just finding that particular opening gave me hope that I can find something that is a good fit.

So I keep looking. And who knows? Maybe I’ll get selected for the show and my penchant for remembering useless facts will finally come in handy.

Wordless Wednesday: March on Washington Edition

March on Washington
I’ve spent most of today talking and reading and listening to reports about today’s 50th anniversary commemoration of the historic March on Washington. Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

You’ll find an excellent roundup of material on both the historic march and today’s event over at MOMocrats, including this morning’s MOMochat podcast.

This Week’s Challenge: Tax-ing Commitments

taxes“I don’t know why it takes you so long to get your taxes done,” my sister sniffed at me after I complained that I was still working on mine.

That was about three weeks ago. I don’t know why it takes me so long either — especially since I work with an enrolled agent, who prepares the actual tax returns.  I just know it does.

I finally submitted all my information last week and breathed a sigh of relief. The following day, I experienced a bout of unaccustomed efficiency: I wrote, I updated websites, I interacted with people. It’s like this huge taxing weight had been lifted and I was able to focus on doing meaningful work.

One day later, I was back to my usual, drifting, unfocused self. But last week, I showed myself that I CAN cross things off my to-do list. And this week, dawggoneit, I’m going to do it again:

1. At 11:00 (Pacific) today, I’ll be joining my friends from The Mission List in a Mayors Against Illegal Guns Twitter party, #DemandAction. Feel free to join in!

2. And by the end of the day, I will have written a post for a blog carnival at MomsRising.org. The subject: Sheryl Sandberg’s new book of advice to working women, “Lean In.” Stay tuned to this spot for that.

3. My sister and I have created a lifestyle blog, In Quest Of… and we have been holding weekly Google Happy Hour hangouts every Monday at 5:00 (Pacific). Add inquestof@gmailcom to your circles and join us!

4. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Dream Girls, produced by L.A.’s, amazing DOMA Theatre group. A review is forthcoming.

5. And then there are my usual weekly projects over at MOMocrats: our podcast (which last month garnered almost as many listens as we had in November, at the height of the Presidential election).

6. There are a number of other commitments I have made over the last several months that I NEVER fulfilled. I want to make good on those.

Watch this spot.

A Good Week

I took the Obama-Biden magnet off my car on Wednesday morning. The election was over, I was happy, and there was no need to show my support via vehicle advertising any longer. Besides, there are a lot of Republicans in my neighborhood and I have no desire to rub their face in the election’s results. I know how I felt during the Bush Administration, whenever I saw a car plastered with Bush-Cheney stickers YEARS after they won their second term.

The campaign is over. Keeping that stuff around is like having Christmas lights on your house on Easter.

The morning after the election, the MOMocrats and I conducted our usual morning podcast, but without the usual preparation. It was more of a happy, relaxed, audio high-five with one another; a phone call with girlfriends who have spent the last year working in the trenches from across the country.

Then, I updated the Run, Mama Run interactive map I’d created last spring, illustrating over 100 pro-choice female candidates who were running for office up and down the ticket. I removed all the women who did not win their races and was surprised that I was still left with more than SIXTY new and re-elected Senators, House Representatives, state and local legislators and officials — and one Governor.

(And I was delighted to note that THREE of those women had been guests on our podcast! New California Assembly member-elect Sharon Quirk-Silva, Representative-elect Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii — and New Hampshire’s next Governor, Maggie Hassan.)

Yesterday, Cynematic and I rewarded ourselves for our hard work with a spa treatment, which we planned to do a couple of months ago when we were in the heat of the campaign. We had originally planned to spend half a day pampering ourselves, but decided to cut that short because just as the Presidential campaign was ending, Cyn landed us two NEW public interest campaigns for our little social media company: and we’ve got targets to meet on BOTH campaigns RIGHT NOW.

So right now: I’m feeling pretty good. And now — I have to get back to work.

Six More Days

By this time next week, I’ll either be exulting — or depressed. Either way, the election will be over.

Every Wednesday, I get to talk politics with some of my favorite people, and we record the conversations for posterity. Today, we talked about Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy, FEMA, and Mitt Romney’s botched disaster relief rally yesterday.

We had 38 live listens — which is something of a record for us. Most people download the podcast, catch us on Stitcher or listen to an archived copy in the browser. We’re averaging a couple of thousand listens per week right now, which is no doubt due to the impending election. We also did a California only show about the ballot propositions, which you can catchhere.

We may do another special podcast before Election Day – or even a Google hangout (er, video!).

And of course, next Wednesday, we’ll be talking about the results.

And on Thursday? My MOMocrats colleague Cynematic and I are going to give ourselves a spa day — which I hope marks our re-entry back into the real world where I don’t feel I need to obsess over the news of the day.
