My Nest May be Empty, But My Kid Still Calls Me Mom

SoCal Mom Blog

My daughter was in the second grade when I started writing this blog (back in 2003). This year, she will graduate from high school. I have been struggling to come up with a new name for the blog, since I get way too many pitches for diapers and toys and other items my newly-minted adult daughter doesn’t need any longer, but  all the variations on “empty nest” and “midlife transition” seem to be taken.

Besides, I’ve been “SoCal Mom” for so long, I am afraid no one will know who I am – there, “SoCal Mom” I remain. For now.

Why I’m Voting for President Obama

I really do try to keep my political rants here at a minimum (that’s what the MOMocrats Facebook page is for). But it’s been hard to do, especially now when the polls show a race that’s a virtual tie. I’m a lifelong Democrat, so the candidate I choose is no surprise. When my sister visited last weekend, I told her I would be returning to the set of The Talk. I told her how much I thought the show had improved since its debut three years ago. My sister gave me a look that said, “Meh.” She’s a fan of that OTHER daytime talk show with a panel of outspoken, funny women. “Nobody ever disagrees with anyone on The Talk,” she said. “They’re too nice to one another.” To her, that’s boring. It’s a criticism she levels on my ownMOMochat podcast, where...

The New Year’s Post

Today is my first REAL day of the New Year, after spending the holiday up at my sister’s and taking all of yesterday to drive back home from Sacramento. It was three relaxing, easy days of hanging out with my sister’s family (which usually entails eating too much, because she and I are Jewish and that is how we celebrate). It was a fitting end to a year that had some ups and too many downs. For example: I began 2012 by breaking my thumb my...
